Brain Rot (Corruption of Mind and Heart) in Modern and Contemporary Man and Imam Said Nursi’s Contribution to Its Remedy

Abstract

This study explores the phenomenon of "brain decay," interpreted as a form of intellectual and spiritual corruption that has afflicted modern humans due to their estrangement from religion and their adoption of a materialistic Western civilization grounded in secularism and atheism. The research highlights the role of Imam Said Nursi in identifying the root of this moral and cognitive crisis and offering a deep spiritual and educational remedy, particularly through his Damascus Sermon and his broader work in Risale-i Nur. Nursi argues that the absence of faith leads to the corruption of both mind and heart, and he emphasizes the necessity of reconnecting the human soul with God and the afterlife. He outlines six core issues affecting Muslim societies and proposes solutions based on hope, sincerity, unity, and Qur’an-centered education. The study concludes that Nursi’s reformist project presents a comprehensive civilizational framework capable of addressing the intellectual and spiritual stagnation facing contemporary Muslim communities.
